準備学習・事後学習
課題に関する討論会やグループワークなどを導入するので、インターネットや図書館などで、当授業で取り上げる課題に関して事前・事後学習をお勧めします。授業後においてはレポート作成などを行い、課題に関する理解を深めてほしい。毎回、授業時間の2倍の自学自習をすること。This lecture will include discussions and group work. Please review related document at the library or through the internet for acquiring prior knowledge. In addition, you are also encouraged to prepare post-lecture reports for deepening your understanding about the topics covered during the lectures. 
履修上の留意
授業への毎回での出席はもちろんのこと、そのほか、討論・グループワークに積極的に参加したがる履修生を歓迎します。万が一討論やグループワークが苦手だと考えている履修生であっても、担当教員の指導やアドバイスを理解して努力すれば、苦手な部分も改善されると期待しています。また、ある課題に関する各自の答えや考えが間違っていても、「努力」の部分を高く評価したい。この授業は英語で行います。Attendance to the lecture is a basic requirement. Students who are interested in active participation to the discussions and group work are greatly welcome. Even though an answer to a particular question or an opinion may be wrong, effort of the student is assessed positively. Please note that this lecture will be conducted in the English Medium. 
授業の概要と目的
 日本から見ると、南アジアの国々は「近くて遠い存在」だと言って良いであろう。日本や周辺の国々と比べ低所得者が目立ち、生活環境、食文化、価値観なども大きく異なっていることや、治安が悪い国も多く、仕事や観光を目的で気楽にいけそうもないと思われる理由があったと言える。しかし、最近では、これらの国々の状況は大きく変化してきており、日本はこの地域と交流を深める必要があると考えられる理由は多く見られる。この授業では、文化・社会的な側面だけでなく、ビジネスの面でも日本との関わりを持つことができる側面を中心に、南アジア諸国に対する理解を深めることを目的とする。

授業計画

1. Introduction to the lecture series on South Asiaオリエンテーション  授業についての紹介。Identify the countries in the South Asia, and orientation. Explanation includes how this lecture is conducted, what is expected from the students, and details relating to the assessment of student performance. 
2. On using multimedia technology for the lecture  Introduction of how multimedia can be used for deepening the understanding about the countries to be selected for further study. Activities include, checking digital maps and google maps. 
3. Group Work: What are the differences between Japan and the countries in the South Asia?  Students will be given a task to identify the differences between Japan and the countries in the South Asia. Discussions in small groups of students will be used to understand the level of awareness of the students about these countries. 
4. Importance of the South Asia for Japan: Analysis of socioeconomic and political aspects  Historical relationship between Japan and the South Asian countries will be analyzed to understand the socioeconomic and political importance of these countries for Japan. 
5. Eminent leaders in the South Asia (1): Who is Mahathma Gandhi?  Discussions during this class will lead to identify specific characteristics of Mahathma Gandhi. In particular, his role in making India independent from the British will be analyzed. 
6. Eminent leaders in the South Asia (2): Contribution of "Mother Teresa" for the country  The term "Charity" is closely associated with Mother Teresa. During this lecture, students will be able to understand the meaning of "charity" and "social contribution", in addition to understand about the life story of "Mother teresa". 
7. Eminent leaders in the South Asia (3): J.R.Jayawardana and the Treaty of San Francisco  The "Treaty of San Francisco", which was signed in 1951 brought many favourable changes to Japan after the second world war. This lecture will help students to realize the importance of this treaty for the rapid development of Japan after the second world war. In addition, how Sri Lanka, a small country in the South Asia, assisted Japan during the above conference also will be highlighted. 
8. What to learn from Gouthama Buddha?  "Buddhism" is known as a religion as well as a philosophy. It was introduced by Gouthama Buddha, who was once a crown prince called "Siddhartha". This lecture will help students to understand historically important issues relating to Buddhism, important persons and places relating to Gouthama Buddha, and basic concepts of this religion. 
9. Analyzing Buddhist Phylosophy  Based on several basic concepts relating to Buddhism, students will receive a chance to analyze the importance and validity of these concepts for the modern life. 
10. Caste System in the South Asia and the impact on the society  How the caste system affects the society and individuals will be used for discussion during this lecture. 
11. Eating habits of the South Asian people  Food culture in the South Asia is quite different from that of Japan. This lecure will assist students to identify special characteristics of the food culture of South Asian countries. (Group Work included) 
12. What is Aryurweda Medicine?  South Asia is famous for Aryurweda Medicine, and is becoming popular even in Japan since recently. This lecture will lead students to identify special characteristics of this medical system. In addition, the importance of keeping a good balance between the human life with nature will be discussed. 
13. Economic development in the South Asia (1)  Latest issues of economic development relating to South Asia will be discussed during this lecture. Even though the countries in South Asia were known as poor countries several decades ago, the situation has been showing a rapid change. This lecture will lead students to identify the most situation of these countries in relation to economic development. 
14. Economic development in the South Asia (2)  Latest issues of economic development relating to South Asia will be discussed during this lecture. This lecture will lead students to identify the most situation of these countries in relation to economic development (Cont'd). 
15. Summary and discussion  履修者によるプレゼンテーションを予定です。While summarizing the content of lectures conducted during earlier lectures, students are encouraged to express their opinions in front of others.

成績評価方法及び評価基準
Attitude and level of participation to the class activities (30%), regular reports (30%): final test (40%), (Total - 100%). Further details will be introduced during the class.
