Students will need to prepare ideas and opinions for each weekly topic to discuss in class. In addition, after each lesson students will participate in an online exchange of ideas through videos. Each week, students will need to spend at least 45 minutes on private study.

Feedback on performance will be given to each student following transcript tasks and discussion tests, highlighting strengths and weaknesses.

Students will need to download the FLIP application and use it during the course. This application is used for making and sharing videos of students speaking about different topics.

授業の概要と目的
|
|
比較的簡単なテーマに関する英文を読み、アイデアをまとめ、ディスカッションを行う。テーマは主に簡単な社会問題や文化などに関するものを扱うが、議論の対立が起こりやすいものを選ぶ工夫をする。授業では、英語ディスカッションI(基礎1)と同様の活動に加え、ディスカッションではテーマに対し特定の立場(反対・賛成など)を各自がとり、その立場を支持するための主張を根拠・理由に基づいて行う。自分の主張に根拠や理由をつけることを意識させ、より説得力のある発言を促すことを目的とする。

|

Beliefs and values
|
Students will learn to demonstrate good judgment and decision making, and to justify their choices with reasons and examples. Discussion skill: Follow-up questions

Gender roles
|
Students will learn to express their opinion on how men and women should work, and to discuss gender roles related to housework and childcare. Discussion skill: Agreeing

First transcript task
|
In groups of three, students record the audio of their discussion, and then perform a basic discourse analysis by writing a transcript with annotations.

5.
|
Culture and language
|
Students will learn to explain some traditional sayings in Japan, and to judge whether a conversation topic is polite or impolite. Discussion skill: Disagreeing
|

6.
|
Uncertainty avoidance
|
Students will learn to define uncertainty avoidance, and to express their own opinion about issues related to uncertainty avoidance. Discussion skill: Giving reasons and examples

7.
|
Review of discussion skills 1 to 5 and midterm discussion test
|
Small group discussions are assessed, based on topics covered in weeks 1 to 6. Students who are not doing the test will review their discussion skills through various activities.

8.
|
Culture shock
|
Students will learn to recognize the highs and lows of study abroad, and to discuss how differences in culture might effect people emotionally. Discussion skill: Asking for clarification

9.
|
Body language
|
Students will learn to interpret body language for effective communication, and to express an opinion about physical behavior that is considered rude. Discussion skill: Active listening

10.
|
Social media
|
Students will learn to discuss the pros and cons of using social media, and to express their opinion about the effect that social media has on society. Discussion skill: Repeating key information

11.
|
Second transcript task
|
In groups of three, students record the audio of their discussion, and then perform a basic discourse analysis by writing a transcript with annotations.

12.
|
Relationships and rules
|
Students will learn to make comparisons between rule-based and relationship-based societies, and to illustrate examples of rule-based and relationship-based societies. Discussion skill: Hesitation devices

13.
|
Success: Being and doing
|
Students will learn to explain cultural differences in definitions of success, and to give examples of different types of success. Discussion skill: Circumlocution
|

14.
|
Christmas: history, society and culture
|
The social and cultural aspects of Christmas will be discussed. Revision of discussion topics covered this semester.
|
|
15.
|
Review of discussion skills 6 to 10 and final discussion test
|
Small group discussions are assessed, based on topics covered in weeks 8 to 13. Students who are not doing the test will review their discussion skills through various activities.
